To be admitted to the seminary, one must show from the beginning "the orientation to celibate life". In this perspective there will not be a barrier to homosexuals as such but to those who "practice".

This is provided for in the new CEI guidelines for admission to seminaries. "In the formative process, when reference is made to homosexual tendencies" it is "appropriate not to reduce discernment to this aspect alone".

"The objective of the formation of the candidate for the priesthood in the affective-sexual field is the ability to accept as a gift, to freely choose and to live responsibly chastity in celibacy ," it reads. "The Church - it is reiterated - while profoundly respecting the people in question, cannot admit to the Seminary and to Holy Orders those who practice homosexuality ."
