The cabin did not stop at the expected point and hit the barrier at the arrival station.

Around a hundred people, 94 tourists and five workers, remained stranded in the Passo Moro area, at approximately 2,800 meters above sea level, in the municipality of Macugnaga (Verbano-Cusio-Ossola). Four passengers suffered minor injuries, according to rescuers. Firefighters and financial police helicopters were deployed to bring the others down to the valley.

The ski slopes were closed. The ski lift, built in 1962, underwent a major overhaul in early 2023, including replacement of motors, pulleys, and cabins. The work cost €2 million, €1.8 million of which was funded by the Piedmont Region and €200,000 by the Municipality of Macugnaga.

"We had a technical problem," explains Filippo Besozzi, director of Macugnaga Trasporti e Servizi, the company that manages the system. " We're evaluating the situation; initial reports suggest the system didn't decelerate properly when entering the station and hit the station barrier."

"Fortunately," he added, "no one was seriously injured." Regarding the cause of the accident, Besozzi explained that the system "braked incorrectly and the emergency systems were activated. We will have to conduct the necessary investigations."
