Cagliari is a team that makes you dream, and the numbers clearly show it. Only twice in their history have the Rossoblu started a season with at least three wins in the first four matchdays: in 1969-70, the year of the Scudetto, and in 1970-71 .
Opta, the world leader in sports statistics, reports this. In both matches, the Sardinians achieved three wins and a draw; this year, they've achieved three wins and a defeat. Not a bad thing, given the difference in ambition between the two teams.
A young and ambitious Cagliari, they haven't scored much (four goals in as many games) but have conceded very little, just two . Their only defeat, incidentally, came against Inter Milan: only 1-0, with the Sardinians coming close to equalizing in the closing stages.
Romano's goal decided the opening match of the season in Parma. The same result, with the roles reversed, was achieved at the Domus against the Italian champions, and another 1-0 victory the following week against Lecce, with Maldini the decisive factor. Last night was the icing on the cake, because after two victories in two head-to-head matches, the coup came in Bergamo : Cagliari took the lead through Mendy, allowed Scamacca to equalize, and finally won 2-1 thanks to a Maldini penalty.
Pisacane is enjoying this golden moment but is looking beyond: "This victory isn't a milestone, it's confirmation of the path we're taking, trying to continue playing high-quality football."
