"We looked death in the face, there were very long moments of terror in which we didn't understand what was happening."

Lorenzo Mascarin is 62 years old and comes from Trentino Alto Adige. When he left Selva di Val Gardena headed for Sardinia, together with his wife Marina Demetz, he certainly couldn't have imagined that a camper holiday could turn into a drama like the one they experienced yesterday morning.

«We had almost arrived in San Giovanni Suergiu when we heard a terrible crash and I lost control of the camper – he says – the vehicle overturned, we found ourselves with our heads upside down. For a moment we were silent in disbelief. Then I met my wife's eyes, I asked her if she was okay. She nodded and then told me: “I think so”».

They braced themselves, crawling between the seats and everything that had invaded every inch of the cabin that was supposed to be their holiday home until next Saturday: "When we came out we found hell." The Ferrari was burning, screams and cries could be heard from those who were helplessly witnessing an absurd tragedy, but no one could do anything to help the two poor Swiss couple trapped in the car.

The South Tyrolean couple, as well as the Indian couple who were in the Lamborghini, remained unharmed: the 118 ambulances and the Misericordia volunteers of San Giovanni Suergiu were on site but there was no need (at least in the morning) to take someone to hospital.

«Shocked but unharmed and for now that's the only thing that matters. – said Lorenzo Masacarin – Then we will have to find a way to organize ourselves to return home». To give them a way to organize themselves, the mayor of San Giovanni Suergiu Elvira Usai made the Town Hall available as a point of support throughout the day.
