Straight to work. Cagliari resumes training today, and not tomorrow, Tuesday, as would be usual. After the defeat against Lazio, the fourth in a row, and the shock given by Claudio Ranieri ( HERE IS THE NEWS ) the rossoblù are trying to change course.
The possibility of a retreat, possibly not a long one, is yet to be evaluated before leaving for Friuli for the match against Udinese on Sunday at 3pm. We need to hurry. The words of president Tommaso Giulini immediately after the match lost 3 to 1 at Domus are more of an order than an indication: everything that had been granted before is no longer valid. Because salvation is at stake.
Ranieri's speech to the players in the Domus locker room applies to the relationship between team and coach. The meaning was very clear: "If I'm the problem, tell me and I'll step aside." But the team has somehow acknowledged that the technical guidance is not the problem. A sort of pact that must now last until the end of the championship. And Udine is the first stop.
Fundamental for how things turned out in the standings: Cagliari is now second to last. Only, because Verona drew and Empoli won. Ranieri's team on Sunday has the chance to fully involve Udinese in the battle for survival by not letting them escape. All the places are affordable, up to Lecce, six points away: a lot, but not an unbridgeable gap.
In the middle there are also Frosinone (with 5 points), Empoli (3), Sassuolo (2 but must recover a match) and Verona (1). And of course Udinese, Sunday's opponent: it is the first real survival clash not to be missed.
