Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran "kept its word" regarding the ceasefire with the United States, after Donald Trump insisted that the truce was over but that it had agreed to further negotiations with the Islamic Republic.

“Iran has kept its word so far, unlike the so-called US Treasury Secretary who is violating paragraph 9 of the Memorandum of Understanding,” Araghchi wrote on X, referring to a section of the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the non-deployment of additional US forces in the region . In his post on X, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi added that “there can be no respect if it is not mutual.”

Clashes between Iran and the United States resumed last Tuesday, the most significant since the signing on June 17 of an agreement aimed at finding a definitive solution to the war that began on February 28 with the Israeli-American attack on Iran. Donald Trump reiterated yesterday that the ceasefire was "over," while agreeing to continue talks with Tehran. "The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue 'discussions.'" Tehran "has made no such request," the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson was quick to clarify, while also announcing that Araghchi would travel to Oman on Saturday to discuss the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran allows only one shipping lane, along its coast, and rules out any return to the pre-war situation, when passage through this strait, which normally transported a fifth of the world's hydrocarbon trade, was free. The United States struck Iran for two consecutive nights after accusing Tehran of attacks on three merchant ships in the strait. In retaliation, Iran opened fire on Gulf states: Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar.
