Russia has sent two frigates near Taiwan in a move that could heighten tensions in the region.

"At 2300 yesterday, two Russian frigates were detected sailing south-north east of our territorial waters, leaving our response area from the Suao Sea to the southeast," Colonel Sun Li-fang said. Taiwan Ministry of Defense spokesman.

The military "used joint intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance methods to grasp the dynamics of Russian ships and sent aircraft, ships and ground-based missile systems to closely monitor the situation."

The sighting of the Moscow ships comes a few days after yet another incursion by Chinese jets near the island's airspace.

In fact, last Saturday, as reported by the Taipei authorities, 19 Chinese military aircraft (including the Chengdu J-10 and Shenyang J-16 fighters), eight of which crossed the median line and approached the contiguous area of Taiwan, 24 nautical miles from the coast.
