The goal is to end the war as soon as possible , even " Putin wants us to stop dying ." This is what US President Donald Trump told the New York Post in an exclusive interview aboard Air Force One. The tycoon is said to have spoken on the phone with Vladimir Putin , to try to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine . "It's better if I don't say it," Trump said when asked how many times the two have spoken. But the US president believes that Putin "cares about the deaths on the battlefield."

“All those dead people. Young, beautiful people. They are like your children, two million of them. Fallen for no reason,” Trump said, adding that “the war would never have happened” if he had been president in 2022. “I have always had a good relationship with Putin,” he later stressed, unlike his predecessor: “Biden has been an embarrassment to our nation. A complete embarrassment.” Trump then said he had a concrete plan to end the war.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he could neither confirm nor deny a phone call between the two presidents. Between the U.S. and Russia, Peskov told the pro-government daily Izvestia, there are "communications conducted through different channels, and against the backdrop of the multiplicity of these communications, I personally may not be aware of something."
