US President-elect Donald Trump spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, the first telephone conversation between the two leaders since Trump won the election.

The Washington Post reports, citing several people familiar with the matter. The two discussed Ukraine.

During the phone call , Trump reportedly advised the Russian president not to escalate the war in Ukraine and reminded him of Washington's significant military presence in Europe: he also expressed interest in further conversations to discuss " a rapid resolution of the war."

Meanwhile, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan told CBS News that Joe Biden and his successor Donald Trump will discuss "top priorities" in their meeting in the Oval Office on Wednesday. The president, he said, will urge the incoming Trump administration not to abandon Ukraine, arguing that this could cause greater instability in Europe.

Sullivan added that Biden’s main message to the president-elect will be his commitment to ensuring a peaceful transfer of power and that he will also talk to him about what is happening in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, as well as how Trump will address these issues when he is in office.
