Two children, aged two and four, were found dead in the family car in southeastern France, hit by an extreme heatwave . "The cause of death has not yet been determined, but the heatwave is the main investigative lead," said Helene Mourges, prosecutor of the town of Carpentras, where maximum temperatures of 39°C were forecast.

The two children were found unconscious in the family car, parked in the garage of the house in the Bois de l'Ubac neighborhood of Carpentras. Despite rescue efforts, both died. La Provence reported that the children were found in cardiac arrest. According to initial reports, they were trapped inside the car, which was very hot.

It is not yet clear how they entered the family vehicle or how long they remained there but, French media report, initial testimonies suggest that they got into the car without the knowledge of the 33-year-old mother .
