A new law has arrived in the Indonesian parliament, and will probably be approved within this month, which provides for the punishment for those who have sex outside of marriage. The penalty is imprisonment for up to one year.

The text, when it enters into force, will apply to both Indonesian citizens and foreigners.

The punishment in case of adultery can take effect only if there are parties who file complaints with the authorities. The law also allows parents of unmarried people to report them for having sex.

Finally , cohabitation before marriage will be prohibited and convicts risk a six-month prison sentence.
