The judge of the court of the American territory of Saipan, Ramona Manglona, has accepted the plea deal for Julian Assange. The founder of WikiLeaks is a free man after a 14-year legal ordeal. The journalist has already left for Australia, where his wife Stella and his two children are waiting for him.

His lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, defined today as a "historic day that puts an end to 14 years of legal battles".

Assange will not be able to return to the United States unless he is granted permission, the US Department of Justice announced after the plea deal and his release. “In accordance with the guilty plea agreement, Assange is prohibited from returning to the US without authorisation,” the ministry said in a statement published while the 52-year-old Australian was on a flight to Canberra.
