The tsunami warning ceased after the powerful eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai underwater volcano in a large area of the Pacific. This was confirmed by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (Ptwc): "On the basis of all available data, the tsunami threat linked to the volcanic eruption is now overcome". Coastal zone authorities are asked to "determine when it will be safe to resume normal activities".

The damage, according to a first estimate, is considerable but no victims have been registered.

The United States, in the past few hours, had said they were "deeply concerned for the people of Tonga" and were ready to provide aid to the countries affected by the eruption and tsunami. Antony Blinken, secretary of state, had explained it.
