Confirmed the nine-year sentence for "fraud" and "contempt of court" for Alexei Navalny .
This was decided by the Second Court of Cassation of the Russian General Jurisdiction, rejecting the appeal of the most famous opponent of Vladimir Putin .
Navalny, 46 , has been in prison in Russia since January 2021 , when he was arrested as soon as he returned to Russia from Germany, where he was being treated for a poisoning that was allegedly concocted by Russian intelligence .
Last March the dissident was sentenced to nine years on charges of misappropriating money donated to his Anti-Corruption Foundation : allegations deemed to be of political origin but the sentence was confirmed on appeal in May, now also in the Supreme Court.
Navalny is now being held in the strict regime colony in Melekhovo.
