Joe Biden is considering whether to continue the race for the White House or withdraw , as he is asked by many dems after his performance in the television debate with Donald Trump.
This was reported by the New York Times (denied by the White House) , according to which the president himself spoke about it with one of his allies. Biden reportedly said he is aware that he cannot save his candidacy if in the next few days he fails to convince the public that he can continue his work in the White House .
The president, Biden's ally told the New York Times, knows that his next appearances, including the ABC interview, must go well. Biden's admission to his ally is the first indication that the president is seriously considering whether he can bounce back after his devastating debate performance. A Biden adviser told the New York Times that the president is "well aware of the political difficulties he faces."
Biden is slowly reaching out to Democratic leaders and has reportedly told at least one of the people closest to him that he is open to the possibility that his plan to move forward after his debate performance might not work.
Immediately after the article was published, the White House was quick to deny it: "The article is absolutely false," said White House spokesman Andrew Bates .
According to the Associated Press, the president and Kamala Harris took part in a conference call with the Democratic National Committee and assured that they "will continue to fight."
«I run, – Biden would have said on the occasion – I am the president of the Democratic Party. Nobody is pushing me out. I've been knocked out before and when you get knocked down you get back up."
In the event of his resignation , Vice President Kamala Harris would be in pole position to replace him . This was reported by Reuters, which cites seven sources from the Biden campaign, the White House and the Democratic National Committee according to which Harris is "the best alternative" in the event of the president resigning.
Some influential Democrats have proposed alternatives to Harris, hypothesizing the names of the governors of California and Michigan, Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer. But, according to Reuters sources, excluding Harris is an almost impossible wish to realize. If nominated, Harris would inherit Biden's fundraising and campaign network.
