The International Court of Justice in The Hague has ordered Israel to halt its military offensive in Rafah, ruling following South Africa's request.

The Court also urged Hamas to "immediately and unconditionally release" the Israeli hostages in Gaza.

After the pronouncement, the Prime Minister of the Jewish state Benyamin Netanyahu called an urgent consultation with his various ministers, including defense minister Yoav Gallant, foreign minister Israel Katz and with the Attorney General Chief of Staff Gali Beharav-Miara.

For its part, the government of South Africa - a state that in recent months had "denounced" Tel Aviv's offensive in the Gaza Strip to the International Court - declared that it "welcomes the strongest order" issued by the judges of Aja.
