All the appeals for clemency from various parts of the world aimed at saving the life of a mentally disabled man sentenced to the death penalty in Singapore were useless.

The sentence was carried out despite the legal battle.

Nagaenthran K. Dharmalingam, 34, of Malaysian nationality, was arrested in 2009 after being caught with a small amount of heroin (42.72 grams) in the city-state which has one of the strictest drug laws.

The following year the sentence was passed. He was hanged overnight in Changi Prison. Many had protested against this decision: among them the United Nations, the European Union and the British billionaire Richard Branson.
