The city of Shanghai in China, 25 million inhabitants, has imposed a lockdown by sector starting from Monday in the face of the increase in infections from Covid related to the Omicron variant.

The local government announced today. First the eastern part of the city will be confined for five days to allow population screening, then the western part, again for 5 days.

More than 14 million residents have already undergone antigen tests, Wu Qianyu, an official of the municipal health commission, said at a press conference. The positives were promptly subjected to the molecular and quarantined.

Almost 2,700 cases were recorded in the city yesterday, all transmitted locally, but only 45 are symptomatic.
