The death toll from the explosion of a tanker in Haiti on Tuesday has risen to 90. In the last weekend alone, about ten people injured in the disaster did not make it despite the treatment.

The confirmation comes from Patrick Almonor, deputy mayor of Cap-Haitien, where the incident took place. "Unfortunately, this is still a partial figure", he added, given the "still critical conditions of some hospitalized people".

The previous toll spoke of 75 deaths and 59 burns, of which 47 were serious.

THE FACTS - In the night between 13 and 14 December, the driver of a tanker had tried to avoid a collision with another vehicle, losing control of the vehicle which overturned. At that point, several people took the opportunity to collect fuel by filling makeshift containers, and that's when the terrible explosion occurred.

The state funeral will be held tomorrow in the city's cathedral, but with only 25 coffins, as most of the victims were buried in a mass grave in Cap-Haitien.

Accidents involving tankers are not uncommon in Haiti where gangs try every way to steal fuel and control its distribution.
