After the Chinese military maneuvers in recent days, Taiwan has purchased 400 Harpoon anti-ship missiles. A purchase aimed, from what transpires, at discouraging an invasion of Beijing's troops on the island.

However, the deal concluded between Taipei and Washington aroused the immediate reaction of the People's Republic.

"We strongly oppose the supply of US missiles," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, recalling that "it is very dangerous to play with fire."

"The facts - added the representative of Beijing - have shown that the current situation in the Taiwan Strait is facing a new round of tension and the main cause is that the Taiwanese authorities have repeatedly tried to rely on the US for the independence, while some people in the US intend to use Taiwan for the sole purpose of containing China."
