Israeli raids in Syria after the rebels took power and Bashar al Assad fled to Russia . According to NGOs , the Jewish state's army has destroyed some of Syria's main military sites, launching about 250 attacks since the president's fall. Tel Aviv has also claimed part of the Golan Heights, sparking opposition from Egypt and Jordan.

Meanwhile, rebel leader al Jolani has appointed his loyalist Muhammad Bashir as head of the transitional government . An engineer, 42 years old, with a degree in law and Sharia (Islamic law), Bashir has administered the city of Idlib. An amnesty for military personnel loyal to the regime has also been announced in recent hours.

Following the fall of Assad, Italy and half of Europe - Germany and Austria in the lead - have decided to stop asylum requests from Syria for fear of a new migration emergency. For the EU, the end of the Assad regime is "a historic moment", but for the moment repatriations to Syria "are unsafe".

For their part, German Chancellor Scholz and French President Macron said they were ready to work with the new leaders, but said the new government in Damascus would have to respect human rights and minorities.

Reactions also from the USA, which through Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that, in the changes that are affecting Syria, "there will be no room for ISIS".
