The man who burned a copy of the Koran in 2023, sparking violent protests in several Islamic countries, has been shot dead in Sweden.

This is Salwan Momika , a 38-year-old Iraqi refugee who became known for publicly burning copies of Islam's holy book.

Momika was shot dead in his apartment in Södertälje, Swedish state television SVT reported.

The murder occurred late Wednesday evening. Inside the apartment, officers found Momika seriously injured.

The man was taken to the hospital, but did not survive.

Momika, who was on trial for inciting hatred and awaiting a court verdict, was reportedly killed during a live broadcast on social media. Five people have been arrested.
