South Korea has officially banned dog meat.

The Seoul parliament has in fact approved a law banning the breeding, slaughter and sale of dogs for their meat, a traditional practice that activists have long targeted, calling the custom "an embarrassment for the country".

The National Assembly thus approved the law with a very large majority, embracing what has been defined as "a cultural revolution" which will come into force after a three-year transition period.

Breeding, selling and slaughtering dogs will then be punishable by up to three years in prison or sanctioned with a fine of 30 million won (about $23,000).
