«Slaughter and sale of dog meat prohibited»: South Korea, green light for “historic” law
Parliament "gives in" to pressure from activists to ban a practice defined as "shameful". Penalties of up to three years in prison for those who fail to do soSouth Korea has officially banned dog meat.
The Seoul parliament has in fact approved a law banning the breeding, slaughter and sale of dogs for their meat, a traditional practice that activists have long targeted, calling the custom "an embarrassment for the country".
The National Assembly thus approved the law with a very large majority, embracing what has been defined as "a cultural revolution" which will come into force after a three-year transition period.
Breeding, selling and slaughtering dogs will then be punishable by up to three years in prison or sanctioned with a fine of 30 million won (about $23,000).
