An 88-year-old Australian doctor, Kenneth Elliott, has been freed seven years after being kidnapped by jihadists in Burkina Faso. The Canberra government announced it today.

Elliott and his wife were kidnapped by Al-Qaeda-linked Ansar Dine terrorists in January 2016. She was released the following month, but Elliott was held hostage.

Now the news of the release, confirmed by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

“Dr. Elliott is safe and reunited with his wife Jocelyn and their children,” Wong explained. Adding: “I am very happy that his release has been secured and that he is back at the

safe with his family.
