Writer Salman Rushdie was attacked today in New York while he was giving a lecture. After first aid, he was taken to the hospital.

A man, according to an initial reconstruction, took the stage and lashed out at Rushdie, then was blocked by the police.

According to police reports, he was wounded in the neck by a stabbing weapon and underwent surgery.

The writer is the author of "The Satanic Verses", the book that was banned in Iran in 1988 because it was considered blasphemous.

Ayatollah Khomeini, the year after its publication, launched a fatwa offering a $ 3 million reward to anyone who killed Rushdie. Supreme leader Ali Khamenei renewed the fatwa in 2017, and in 2019 via Twitter.
