Nine "non-working" days to combat Covid which is killing a thousand victims a day in Russia.

President Vladimir Putin announced that due to the alarming epidemiological situation, "non-working days" will be declared, but with the maintenance of wages those from 30 October to 7 November.

The proposal was made yesterday by Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova. The latest bulletin speaks of 1,028 deaths in 24 hours, the maximum since the beginning of the epidemic, while the new confirmed cases are 34,073.

Not even a third of the population in Russia is vaccinated. Other restrictions are the obligation to stay at home for unvaccinated and frail over 60s.

Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin called the new restrictions "difficult" but "necessary".
