A small plane crashed into a San Diego neighborhood at dawn, setting fires to about 15 homes and forcing evacuations. Several vehicles also caught fire.

The plane was a private Cessna 550 registered in the Midwest. All aboard were killed, but Fire Marshal Dan Eddy said, “We don’t know how many passengers were on board at this time other than the pilot. We’re checking the paperwork to see who the pilot was and how many people he was carrying. These types of planes have 10-12 seats.”

San Diego firefighters, military and police are checking the neighborhood house by house. "We have found no deaths, nor are there any injuries that required hospitalization," the fire official said.

The accident occurred around 3.45am (12.45pm in Italy), while visibility was reduced by thick fog – a fairly common phenomenon near the ocean this season – in the area that lies on the landing path of the nearby Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport.

The Cessna 550 first hit a house and then began to fall apart. “We had a terrifying scene, with houses and cars catching fire at the same time,” said San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl. The fires are all out.
