Tragedy in Georgia , on Sapelo Island, United States, where at least seven people died after the walkway of a ferry dock collapsed .

Several people were taken to hospitals , and crews from the U.S. Coast Guard and other local agencies are searching the water for additional survivors , a Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman said.

When the boardwalk collapsed, dozens of people fell into the water : crowds had gathered on the island to celebrate the small Gullah-Geechee community of descendants of black slaves.

Sapelo Island is located approximately 100 kilometers south of Savannah and can be reached from the mainland by boat.
