The Omicron variant has now spread all over the world. And when we say the whole world we also mean the most remote corners. The mutated form of the Covid-19 virus - more contagious than the previous ones - has in fact also reached Antarctica: some researchers of the Belgian polar station Princess Elisabeth tested positive, despite the strict measures adopted.

The news is reported by the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, according to which all the researchers had received at least two doses of the vaccine and had tested negative on departure for the polar base. Of the 25 people present at the station, two thirds have tested positive for the virus, although none of them show severe symptoms.

According to a virologist consulted by the Polar Secretariat, the probability that the infection at the station is due to the Omicron variant is high, given that this represents 99% of cases in South Africa, which is precisely the country of last stop before reaching Antarctica .
