Murder in Manhattan, in the heart of New York: the CEO of the health insurance giant UnitedHealthcare, 50-year-old Brian Thompson, was shot to death in the chest while he was walking to the Hilton hotel to attend a conference of the company.

The killer, wearing a cream-colored jacket, a black mask and a gray backpack, was waiting for him. The crime was a "premeditated, planned and targeted attack", the New York police said in a press conference : the killer waited for the victim for about ten minutes, approached him from behind and fired several shots at a distance of six meters, at least one in the back and one in the right calf. He then fled armed east on Sixth Avenue, perhaps on a bicycle, towards Central Park.

"Our initial investigation reveals that this was not a random act of violence. This was a targeted killing," New York Mayor Eric Adams said. Meanwhile, police have released images of the shooter and offered a $10,000 reward for information.
