The alarm was raised in Paris, where the police carried out an intervention at the Iranian Consulate, in rue de Fresnel, in the residential 16th arrondissement.

Around 11 this morning, a witness reported, "a man entered the representative office with a hand grenade or a vest stuffed with explosives".

The suspect, according to local media, declared that he had explosives with him and that he wanted to "avenge his brother". In reality he was not found in possession of any dangerous material.

From what we understand, he had attempted to set fire to the same consulate last September and was due to appear in court on Monday.

The police prefect, Laurent Nuñez, ordered the immediate deployment of special units. The prefecture specified that the Iranian consulate made a "request for intervention".

The area was entirely cordoned off and made inaccessible.

The police managed to arrest the suspect.
