Former US President Jimmy Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, has died at the age of 100.

A peanut farmer, Carter was elected governor of Georgia in 1971. He held the office until 1975. The following year he was elected the 39th American president.

He served only one term in the White House, four years from 1977 to 1981. His presidency was marked by two events: the Camp David Accords in 1978 between Egypt and Israel, and the American hostage crisis in Iran, which contributed to his defeat in the race for a second term.

In 2015, Carter announced that he was suffering from liver cancer that had spread to other parts of his body, for which he underwent several surgeries.
