Sibilla Barbieri wanted to die in her apartment in Rome. But for Italy he had no right to assisted suicide. And so the actress and director, terminally ill with cancer, chose to go to die in Switzerland, together with her son and members of the Luca Coscioni association.
Who will spontaneously show up at the police station tomorrow to report themselves: «We have urged the ASL Roma 1 to carry out checks on the state of health of our client and to proceed as indicated by the ruling of unconstitutionality of the Constitutional Court on the Cappato/Antoniani case - he explained the lawyer of the Coscioni association, Filomena Gallo -. The managers of the health company prepared the checks and sent a denial of access to aid in voluntary death because, according to an ad hoc company commission, the sick person was not dependent on life support treatments ." In short, he didn't meet the requirements.

As if that wasn't enough, the legal team received the go-ahead from the ethics committee to challenge the medical denial when the woman had already died in Switzerland. «We then learned from the minutes - continues the lawyer - that the works commission could not adhere to the positive opinion of the ethics committee as they believe that there is no life support treatment and it is sad and humiliating to even read "that the current conditions are not consistent with intolerable physical suffering".

Barbieri was 58 years old: in a video she railed against what she herself defined as "very serious discrimination between cancer patients and those who also find themselves in other non-terminal conditions". «For this reason - he stated shortly before leaving Italy - I freely decided to get help by going to Switzerland because I have the necessary 10 thousand euros and I can still physically go there . But all the other people condemned to die from a disease who cannot because they don't have the means, because they are alone or don't have the information, how do they do it? This is another serious discrimination that the State must remedy ."

«I thank the Luca Coscioni association and the disobedients - his last words - and I thank you who listened to me instead of the State».
