Iran goes to the polls to elect the new president, after the death of Ebrahim Raisi, victim of a tragic helicopter accident in recent weeks.

The first round of voting took place on 28 June and Tehran's Interior Ministry officially announced that the reformist candidate Massud Pezeshkian and the ultra-conservative Said Jalili will compete in the run-off - scheduled for 5 July - with the former obtained a greater number of preferences in the first round.

The vote was characterized by a turnout at an all-time low: participation at the polls stopped at 40% of the 61 million entitled to vote.

In the 2021 presidential election, when the previous historic low was recorded since the founding of the Islamic Republic in 1979, it was just over 48%.
