Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to three years in prison, one year without parole, for bribery of a magistrate and influence peddling, with the benefit of an electronic bracelet.

The Court of Cassation has in fact rejected the appeal of Sarkozy's lawyers against the final conviction on appeal. That of Sarkozy, 69, is an unprecedented conviction for a former head of the French state.

Sarkozy's lawyer – Patrice Spinosi – has already announced his intention to appeal to the European Court : «The appeal to the European Court – said the lawyer – is explained by the fact that the jurisprudence of the Court itself is contrary to what was established today by the French Supreme Court».
