In Australia, the first case of the Omicron variant of Covid transmitted locally was recorded today. This is a Sydney student who has never been abroad nor has any ties to people who have traveled overseas.

The young man tested positive for the South African variant despite the authorities having banned entry into the country by non-residents and imposed restrictions on flights from Southern Africa. Investigations and tracking of other individuals are ongoing.

Prior to this episode, Australia had identified nine Omicron-related infections, all of which involved people from overseas. The school the student attended - Regents Park Christian School, in a western suburb of Sydney - has been closed and the boy's family quarantined. There are currently around 2,000 cases of Covid per day in Australia.

USA - In Hawaii, health authorities have announced that they have identified the first case of the new variant, and another has also been registered in Los Angeles County. In addition, a few hours ago, the State of New York announced the discovery of five cases of which at least two - one in Brooklyn and one in Queens - in New York. Governor Kathryn Hochul and Big Apple Mayor Bill de Blasio urge residents to wear masks indoors and get vaccinated.
