Hurricane Helene's Fury: Over One Hundred Victims in the US
This is the third deadliest superstorm in the last 50 years. Biden: "We will not leave the affected states alone"The trail of death and destruction left by Helene, the hurricane that is currently battering the United States, continues.
The number of victims claimed by the superstorm has in fact exceeded one hundred, the third most devastating in the last 50 years to have hit the east coast of the United States, after Katrina in 2015 (1,833 victims) and Ian in 2022 (150 deaths).
Six states are suffering the worst consequences (North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia): in addition to deaths, injuries and evacuees, the population is dealing with extensive damage, flooding and blackouts. And according to local authorities, the toll is, unfortunately, destined to worsen.
Helene made landfall in northwest Florida on Thursday evening as a Category 4 hurricane on a scale of 5, with winds measured at 140 mph. The hurricane then moved north, losing intensity but leaving behind a desolate landscape.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene,” said President Joe Biden, stressing that “the road to recovery will be long.” “We will support these communities for as long as it takes to ensure they can recover and rebuild,” the Washington leader added.
