Yemeni Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for the attack on the Liberian-flagged, Swiss-owned container ship MSC Sky II headed towards Djibouti. A fire broke out on board and was subsequently put out by the crew. The captain said there were no injuries on board.
Centcom announced this, explaining that two missiles were launched against the vessel, 91 nautical miles south-east of Aden. The first ended up in the water, while the second hit the container ship causing some damage. The vessel is now continuing its course.
Yemeni Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree identified the ship as "Israeli" and said it was targeted with anti-ship missiles and received a direct hit.
