A 56-year-old man died on the island of Phu Quoc in the southern Vietnamese province of Kien Giang after rescuing five distressed tourists who were swimming in rough seas.

The man, an island resident named Nguyen Van Thai , rushed after hearing cries for help from a group of three adults and two children . The high waves and the undertow prevented him from taking them ashore, but then another local, Do Duy Dung, 35, arrived in his boat. Both managed to pick up the tourists, who are now in stable condition.

Thai, on the other hand, exhausted by the effort , died while being transported to the hospital .

In Phu Quoc, high and strong waves are typical of this period, and put swimmers at serious risk of drowning.

The latest fatal accident occurred two months ago when Lieutenant Colonel Bui Van Nhien died after rescuing a drowning 13-year-old boy.
