The final declaration of the G7 illustrated by Minister Marina Calderone as the concluding act of the Cagliari summit opens with a clear condemnation of the Russian aggression against Ukraine («unjustified, illegal, continuous and unprovoked») and of the Hamas attack on Israel : «We reaffirm», the document reads, «our strong condemnation of the brutal terrorist attacks conducted by Hamas and other terrorist groups against Israel on 7 October 2023. We are deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and, recalling UN Security Council Resolution 2735 , we call for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages and a sustained increase in humanitarian assistance».

The first point of the declaration concerns artificial intelligence. This is the incipit:

"We recognize that safe, secure and trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, including generative AI, can increase labor productivity, improve working conditions and occupational safety and health, empower workers and create quality employment opportunities, including for persons with disabilities, improve the effectiveness of labor market and training policies, and address labor shortages. Furthermore, AI can serve as an enabler for entrepreneurship, allowing individuals to leverage advanced technologies to develop and scale innovative projects.

We emphasize that the benefits of AI in the world of work can be maximized and distributed equitably across the population only when human rights and social inclusion are at the center, empowering workers. Realizing the full potential of AI technologies requires well-targeted public and private investments, including in AI infrastructure, reskilling and upskilling, as well as education.

To fully benefit from the opportunities offered by AI, we must continue to reconcile technological development with the protection of workers' rights and minimize potential risks to the world of work, especially for people in vulnerable and marginalized situations. These risks include increasing inequalities and discrimination, a negative impact on occupational safety and health, including mental health, a weakening of workers' representation and collective bargaining power, the misuse of digital surveillance on workers, as well as threats to privacy and accountability in the world of work. We underline that social dialogue and collective bargaining can help ensure a safe, secure and trustworthy adoption of AI in the world of work.
