Harvard, the world's richest university and the oldest in the United States, has sued the Trump administration over its threats to cut billions of dollars in research funding as part of a crusade against the nation's top colleges in the name of an alleged fight against anti-Semitism on campus, the New York Times reports.
The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in Massachusetts, accuses the government of launching a large-scale attack as a “tool to gain control of academic decision-making at Harvard.”
The lawsuit also names other major universities that have suffered sharp cuts in funding. The lawsuit names as plaintiffs Robert F. Kennedy Jr., secretary of health; Linda M. McMahon, secretary of education; Stephen Ehikian, acting administrator of the General Services Administration; Attorney General Pamela Bondi; and several other administration officials.
But more than 100 US universities and colleges, including prestigious Ivy League institutions such as Princeton and Brown, published a joint letter on Tuesday condemning the "political interference" of the
president in the education system.
“We speak with one voice against the unprecedented government intervention and political interference that are endangering American higher education,” the letter reads.
