"We ask the Israeli authorities to cease the military operation without delay and to resume the path to negotiations , the only possible way to achieve the immediate release of the hostages and obtain a lasting ceasefire", reads the note. "Such an operation risks causing a catastrophic situation for the civilian populations of Gaza - explains the statement -, who have already been displaced on several occasions".

Washington meanwhile criticized Tel Aviv for the use of American weapons in Gaza but without suspending their shipment.

Yesterday the UN Assembly approved a resolution recognizing Palestine as qualified to become a full member of the United Nations.

According to Israeli Foreign Minister Katz, "the decision is a reward for Hamas terrorists."
