A driver deliberately ran over several people on the island of Oléron, off France's Atlantic coast, injuring at least ten people before being arrested.
The Attorney General has opened an investigation into attempted murder, while the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office has said it is monitoring the case.
The attack occurred this morning, around 8:45 a.m., on a road between two villages on the island of Oléron, Dolus-d'Oléron and Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron. According to the La Rochelle prosecutor's office, ten people were injured, four of them seriously, according to French media. The gendarmerie reported five injuries, three of them seriously, among them residents between the ages of 22 and 67, from Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron and Dolus-d'Oléron.
Some of the victims were airlifted to Poitiers University Hospital. The driver was stopped by police a few minutes after the accident while attempting to set fire to his vehicle. Gas canisters were found in his car, which, according to initial reports, only partially caught fire.
Upon being arrested, the suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is great), said Arnaud Laraize, La Rochelle prosecutor.
