For the first time in New York, a woman will head the largest and most well-known police department in the United States. The choice of Keechant Sewell, the African American chief of detectives for Nassau County, was elected mayor Eric Adams. He also has a background as a policeman.

The 49-year-old takes over from Dermont Shea, a two-year commissioner and close to retirement after 30 years in service. He will take office on January 1, when Adams takes office as mayor.
