A night fire devastated a hostel in southern Moscow, killing eight people and injuring 4 others.

The fire, which would have been unleashed on the ground floor, enveloped three rooms and a corridor on the first floor of an apartment building. According to Andrei Rumiantsev, interim head of the security services of the Russian capital, "the bars on the windows prevented people from escaping to safety and this was the main cause of deaths". It also appears that the fire alarm did not work properly.

Investigations are underway.
