At the age of 85, Frederik Willem de Klerk, the last white president of South Africa, who was awarded the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize along with Nelson Mandela, who he released from prison, died.

The news was released by his Foundation, with a message of condolence, which reads: "It is with the greatest sadness that the FW de Klerk Foundation announces the peaceful death of former President FW de Klerk at his Fresnaye home this morning. after battling cancer ".

In office from 1989 to 1994, in addition to ending the apartheid of the black South African population, de Klerk was also the president under whom universal suffrage was introduced in the country. But he remains a controversial figure: the white supremacists considered him as a sort of "traitor", while some anti-apartheid groups have accused him of covering up human rights violations.
