Brittney Griner, the American basketball player detained for months in Russia, is freed.
According to reports, the 32-year-old athlete, daughter of a Vietnam veteran, arrested in Moscow in February on charges of possession of hashish - was released as part of a prisoner exchange agreed between Washington and the Kremlin .
In exchange for the release of Griner - who was sentenced to 9 years in prison last August by a Russian court - the US has in turn released the arms dealer Viktor Bout.
The exchange, reported the Russian Foreign Ministry, took place at Abu Dhabi airport .
“I spoke to Brittney Griner. He is safe, on the plane and on his way home,” US President Joe Biden said, confirming the release.
