"The Mes is a topic I am not asked, perhaps there is not the same attention as in the Italian debate". Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this to journalists after the EU summit.

«On the other hand, there was discussion – added the premier – of how to deal with the issue of competitiveness, asking for equals

conditions for countries with less fiscal space, i.e. flexibility in the use of existing funds. Today, this element is present in the Commission's proposals and for Italy between Pnrr and Cohesion funds it means 300 billion euros which can be better spent».

Overall Meloni said she was "very satisfied" with the summit, even if the summit did not lead to a definitive and shared agreement on the subject of immigration, also due to the opposition of Poland and Hungary.

Speaking of which, Meloni commented: «I am never disappointed by those who defend their national interests. The position of Poland and Hungary does not concern the external dimension which is the Italian priority and the union is the way to face migration by getting everyone to agree".

However, the President of the EU Council Charles Michel is looking at the glass half full: «During the European Council, two out of 27 countries, Poland and Hungary, said they were against both the substance and the method by which it came to approve the Migration Pact, i.e. by qualified majority, and have a different interpretation of the previous conclusions but 25 others agree instead.

We must remain calm, the pact has been approved and we will work towards its definitive implementation".
