Following the intervention of Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Italian Ambassador to Cairo Agostino Palese secured the release of Italian citizen Nessy Guerra, who returned home with her daughter. The woman, an Italian citizen forced to stay in Egypt with her daughter because she was involved in a legal case with her Egyptian husband, had been taken by police during the night.
Egyptian police authorities claimed the reason for the arrest was an executive order granting Aisha's father, Tamer Hamouda, the right to see his daughter, but did not provide further details. What happened last night is believed to be linked to an Egyptian judge's request to allow the father, who is also involved in another legal case, to see the child. According to reports, the government, at the highest level, is following the case. Custody of the child, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is the crux of a long-running dispute with her ex-husband, who has also been convicted in Italy for various crimes and was recently arrested and then released on bail for threatening the Italian Consul in Hurghada.
The Italian government is currently pressuring Egyptian authorities at the highest level to ensure maximum protection for the Italian national and her child, especially to prevent further incidents of violence or threats from her husband.
