According to CNN, Kamala Harris has chosen her deputy: it will be Tim Walz, the 60-year-old governor of Minnesota, a state in the crucial Midwest.

Married with two children, a former history teacher and former member of the National Guard, he is a political veteran having served in Congress for 12 years before being elected to lead his state twice.

Harris meanwhile formally secured the Democratic nomination for president, becoming the first black woman to win the nomination of a major party. The vice president garnered the support of 99% of the 4,567 delegates, the Democratic National Committee reported . Voting was held virtually five days in advance of the convention in Chicago to avoid legal hassles in balloting in Ohio.
